1. Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Carvers' Road
The classic escape. Founded in 1890 and now managed under Ghana's Plant Genetic Resources programme, the gardens sit on the Akuapem ridge at roughly 400 metres, which is enough altitude to make the air noticeably cooler than the coast.
Go on a weekday morning to have the avenues almost to yourself. Stop at the wood carvers' stalls on the road up and eat lunch at a ridge restaurant with the city below. Entry is around GH₵ 50 – 100.
2. Shai Hills Resource Reserve
Forty minutes past Tema on the Akosombo road, Shai Hills is the closest thing Accra has to a safari. Baboons line the entrance track; inside there are kob antelope, ostriches, bat caves and inselbergs you can hike in an hour. A guide costs around GH₵ 150 – 300 and is required for the caves.
Best in the dry season when tracks are firm. Bring water — there is little shade on the ridges.
3. Ada Foah and the Volta Estuary
Two hours east, the Volta empties into the Atlantic through a maze of sandbars and palm islands. Take a boat to the estuary mouth, swim in the calm river channel, and stay at a beach chalet if you can extend to an overnight. This is the region's best weekend getaway, and our Ada Foah river escape handles boats, lunch and transport.
4. Kokrobite, Langma and Bojo Beach
Forty-five minutes west on the Winneba road. Kokrobite is the drumming-and-dance village that has drawn travellers for decades; Langma next door is quieter; Bojo Beach is reached by a short canoe crossing and is the most family-friendly of the three. Entry fees run GH₵ 50 – 150 per person.
5. Boti Falls, Umbrella Rock and the Three-Headed Palm
Just over two hours north in the Eastern Region, Boti Falls runs as twin cascades in the rainy season and thins to a single fall in the dry months. A 45-minute walk from the falls brings you to Umbrella Rock and the unusual three-headed palm. Wear proper shoes; the 250-step descent is slippery after rain.
6. Sakumono and Tsokomey Lagoons
Half an hour from the city and largely ignored by visitors, the Sakumono Ramsar site is a protected coastal wetland listed under the Ramsar Convention and supports herons, egrets, plovers and migratory waders. Go at dawn or an hour before sunset with binoculars. It costs nothing beyond your transport.
7. Prampram and Old Ningo
An hour east on the coast road: long, near-empty beaches, fishing canoes, the ruins of Fort Vernon and a string of small beach lodges that fill only at weekends. Perfect for travellers who want the sea without the Labadi crowds.
8. Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, Mampong-Akuapem
The site where cocoa cultivation in Ghana began in 1879, from pods carried home from Fernando Pó. It is a modest, quiet stop — best combined with Aburi on the same run up the ridge — and it explains an industry that still shapes the national economy, as tracked by the Ghana Cocoa Board.
Planning Notes
- Leave early. Anything north or east means clearing Madina, Tema or Kasoa before 7:30 a.m., or losing 90 minutes. Our tro-tro guide explains Accra's rush-hour pattern.
- Hire a car with a driver for anywhere beyond Kokrobite. Ride-hailing rarely returns from Shai Hills or Boti, and our chauffeur-driven car rental works out cheaper than a stranded afternoon.
- Carry cash in small notes. Reserve gates, guides and beach lodges are cash or mobile money only.
- Rainy season (April–July) makes waterfalls spectacular and dirt tracks difficult — the Ghana Meteorological Agency posts the forecast worth checking the night before.
- Protected areas such as Shai Hills are managed by the Forestry Commission's Wildlife Division, so fees and opening hours occasionally change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best day trips from Accra?
Aburi Botanical Gardens (1h 15m), Shai Hills Resource Reserve (1h 10m), Ada Foah and the Volta estuary (2h), Kokrobite and Bojo Beach (45m), Boti Falls and Umbrella Rock (2h), the Sakumono lagoon wetland (30m), Prampram's beaches (1h 15m) and the Tetteh Quarshie cocoa farm at Mampong (1h 30m).
Where can I go for a weekend getaway near Accra?
Ada Foah is the strongest overnight option, with river chalets and beach lodges two hours east. Prampram and Ningo offer quiet coastal weekends an hour away, and pairing Aburi with Boti Falls makes a good inland overnight in the Eastern Region.
How much does a day trip from Accra cost?
Expect GH₵ 250–600 for two at Sakumono or a nearby beach, GH₵ 700–1,600 for Aburi or Shai Hills including a car and driver, and GH₵ 1,400–3,000 for a full Ada Foah day with boats and lunch.
Can I visit Shai Hills without a car?
Getting there by tro-tro on the Akosombo road is possible, but returning is unreliable and the reserve is large. A chauffeur-driven car for the day is the practical option, and a park guide costing GH₵ 150–300 is required for the caves.
Is Aburi worth visiting from Accra?
Yes. The gardens sit around 400 metres above sea level, so the air is noticeably cooler, and the site dates to 1890 with mature avenues, a craft village on the approach road and ridge restaurants overlooking the city. Weekday mornings are the quietest.
What is the best season for day trips around Accra?
The dry months from November to March give firm tracks and easy hiking at Shai Hills and Boti. The rainy season from April to July makes waterfalls far more impressive but roads and trails harder, so check the forecast the night before.
