Wli Waterfalls Ghana: Complete Guide to the Upper and Lower Falls

Ghana's tallest waterfall, a fruit bat colony and views into Togo. How to choose between the Lower and Upper Falls hikes and plan the trip from Accra.

Wli Waterfalls Ghana: Complete Guide to the Upper and Lower Falls

Wli Waterfalls (also written Wli Agumatsa Falls) is the tallest waterfall in Ghana and one of the most rewarding day hikes in West Africa. It sits in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary near Hohoe in the Volta Region, close to the Togo border. This guide covers the Lower and Upper Falls hikes, how to get there from Accra, the best season and what to pack.

Where Is Wli Waterfalls?

Wli is a small village in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. The falls drop from the Agumatsa range, which forms part of the hills along Ghana's eastern border with Togo. The site is managed as the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, so entry is through the visitor centre in Wli village, where guides are assigned.

  • Distance from Accra: roughly 220–280 km depending on route
  • Driving time: about 4–5 hours by private car, longer by public transport
  • Nearest town: Hohoe (about 20 minutes away)

Lower Falls vs Upper Falls

Most visitors choose between two hikes. Your choice depends on fitness and time.

Lower Falls (easy)

  • About 40–60 minutes each way on a mostly flat forest trail
  • Several small stream crossings on footbridges
  • Ends at a wide plunge pool where you can swim in the dry season
  • Suitable for families and most fitness levels

Upper Falls (challenging)

  • About 2–3 hours up, steep and slippery in places
  • Rewarding views over the Volta hills and into Togo
  • Recommended only for confident hikers with good shoes
  • Allow a full day if you plan to do both Upper and Lower

The Fruit Bat Colony

The cliffs around the Lower Falls host a large colony of straw-coloured fruit bats. At dusk they leave in huge numbers — a striking sight. Keep a respectful distance and follow your guide's instructions; wild bats should never be handled.

Best Time to Visit

  • Rainy season (roughly May–October): the most water and the loudest falls, but muddier trails
  • Dry season (roughly November–March): easier hiking and calmer swimming, but lower water volume and harmattan haze in December–February

If you want the classic photo of a full cascade, aim for August to October.

How to Get There

  1. Private tour from Accra: the simplest option. Our Wli Waterfalls trek includes transport, a driver and planning.
  2. Self-drive: take the Accra–Ho road, then continue towards Hohoe and Wli.
  3. Public transport: buses and tro-tros run from Accra to Hohoe; take a taxi from Hohoe to Wli. Read our tro-tro guide first.

What to Pack

  • Hiking shoes with grip (not flip-flops)
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person
  • Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
  • Insect repellent and a light rain jacket
  • Small cash in cedis for entry and guide tips
  • A waterproof bag for your phone

Health and Safety

Check the CDC travel health page for Ghana before travelling — a yellow fever certificate is required to enter Ghana, and malaria prevention is recommended. Do not swim directly under the falling water, and avoid the Upper Falls trail in heavy rain.

Combine Wli With Other Volta Attractions

Wli pairs well with nearby sites for a two- or three-day trip:

  • Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary — mona monkeys in a community-run forest
  • Mount Afadjato — one of Ghana's highest points
  • Lake Volta and Akosombo — on the drive back to Accra
