How to Get a Ghana Passport in 2026: Application, Fees, Renewal & Tracking Guide

Why Your Ghana Passport Matters in 2026

A Ghanaian passport is your gateway to 66+ visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations, every ECOWAS country, and the international visa applications that open up the UK, USA, Canada, Schengen, Dubai and beyond. The new biometric e-passport (rolled out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration) is now mandatory for all new applications and renewals.

This guide walks you through every step of getting or renewing a Ghana passport in 2026 — online application, fees, document requirements, processing times, and how to track your booklet.

Types of Ghana Passports

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a Ghana Passport Online

Step 1: Register on the Online Portal

Go to the official portal at passportapplication.gov.gh. Create an account using your email and Ghana Card number.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Fill in:

  • Personal details (must match your Ghana Card exactly)
  • Parents' information
  • Next of kin
  • Travel history
  • Choice of pickup centre

Double-check spellings — corrections after submission require a fresh statutory declaration.

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee Online

Use Visa, Mastercard or mobile money (MTN MoMo, AirtelTigo Money, Telecel Cash). See the fee table below.

Step 4: Book a Biometric Appointment

Select your preferred Passport Application Centre (PAC):

  • Accra: Ridge HQ, Accra Mall, Achimota Mall
  • Kumasi: Adum
  • Takoradi: Ministries
  • Tamale: Regional Coordinating Council
  • Ho, Sunyani, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Wa, Bolgatanga: Regional offices
  • Premium Centre (Accra): 1–2 day processing, higher fee

Step 5: Attend Your Biometric Appointment

Bring all original documents. The PAC will:

  • Verify your Ghana Card biometrically
  • Capture your fingerprints, photo and signature
  • Stamp your acknowledgement slip

Step 6: Track Your Application

Use the tracking portal on the passport application website, or the MoFA SMS service (text your application number to the shortcode listed on your slip).

Step 7: Collect Your Passport

You'll receive an SMS when ready. Bring:

  • Your acknowledgement slip
  • Your Ghana Card
  • The old passport (for renewals — it will be cancelled and returned)

Renewal at Accra 2–4 weeks
Renewal abroad (High Commissions) 8–12 weeks
Lost passport replacement 4–6 weeks (after police report)

Plan ahead — never travel with less than 6 months passport validity, as most embassies will reject your visa application or your airline will deny boarding.

How to Renew Your Ghana Passport

The renewal process is identical to a new application — there is no "renewal-only" form. You'll:

  1. Apply online via the same portal
  2. Upload a clear scan of your old passport bio page
  3. Attend biometric capture
  4. Surrender your old passport at collection (it's cancelled and returned)

Tip: Start renewal at least 9 months before your current passport expires to avoid disrupting visa applications and travel plans.

What to Do if You Lose Your Passport

  1. Report at the nearest police station within 24 hours — get an official police extract
  2. Publish a notice in a Ghanaian daily newspaper (Daily Graphic, Ghanaian Times)
  3. Swear an affidavit at a Commissioner of Oaths confirming the loss
  4. Reapply online as a lost-passport replacement (higher fee)
  5. Allow 4–6 weeks for the new booklet

Common Reasons Ghana Passport Applications Are Delayed or Rejected

  • Name mismatch between Ghana Card, birth certificate and application
  • Poor-quality photos (wrong background, glare, glasses, jewellery)
  • Missing parental consent for minors
  • Unpaid or pending court matters flagged in background checks
  • Incomplete biometrics captured at the PAC
  • Wrong pickup centre selected (booklet sent to wrong region)
